This type of training allows people of all body types to study it. Because a student is exposed to a wide range of tactics, it lets a person capitalize on what they are good at and develop that which they are not. Our goal is NOT to have all of our students look the same, it is for all of our students to develop according to their own body type and discover how to make the principals behind the techniques work for them as an individual. The name Kai-Shin can be literally translated as Kai = Open, Shin = Mind/Heart. Word for word it can be read “Open Mind”. The the range of methods from which it employs are from Okinawan, Chinese, Filipino, Thai, Indonesian, Malaysian, Brazilian and Japanese cultures. The Kai-Shin curriculum is the result of T. Kent Nelson's study of the concepts & philosophies of Jeet Kune Do. He first began to develop his views of martial principal study in 1992, and his approach was recognized and endorsed by the Unity Martial Arts Association on May 13, 1997. He has been evolving and improving on his vision ever since, training very closely with such martial art living legends as Guro Dan Inosanto and Suikendo founder Sensei Tadashi Yamashita. He has also trained with such masters as US Navy SEAL hand-to-hand combat creator Sifu Paul Vunak, pressure point expert Taika Seiyu Oyata, and Filipino combat knife expert Dr. Gyi. The main systems which contribute to the art are Boxing-Kickboxing, Kali-Silat, Suikendo, Jun Fan Gung Fu / Jeet Kune Do, Muay Thai, and Jujitsu. Along with his strong belief in Martial Arts Cross Training, he also draws from those techniques found within law enforcement and military defensive tactics.
