You will gain CONFIDENCE by learning the skills to Realistically Defend Yourself.
The focus of our Empty-Hand curriculum (Kai-Shin) is to teach you both the practical means of self defense and the character building life lesson philosophies of a traditional martial art. We achieve this by developing the physical techniques through the methods of modern martial arts cross-training, and by developing the mind through a traditional martial arts environment.

We teach all Five training areas of Self Defense, and the Three main principals for controling a fight:
1. Striking                 1. Interception/Destruction
2. Clinching              2. Forward Pressure
3. Trapping               3. Termination
4. Manipulation
5. Grappling

We teach not only the physical techniques you need, but most imprtantly the mindset of how to survive a real fight.

Covering techniques from stand up positions, on the ground, and defense from weapons, we blend graceful smooth motions with hard hitting explosive power. The most accurate description of Kai-Shin is the study of the principals, concepts, and paradigms shared among most forms of martial arts, which make them work.

This type of training allows people of all body types to study it. Because a student is exposed to a wide range of tactics, it lets a person capitalize on what they are good at and develop that which they are not.

Our goal is NOT to have all of our students look the same, it is for all of our students to develop according to their own body type and discover how to make the principals behind the techniques work for them as an individual.

The name Kai-Shin can be literally translated as Kai = Open, Shin = Mind/Heart. Word for word it can be read “Open Mind”.  The the range of methods from which it employs are from Okinawan, Chinese, Filipino, Thai, Indonesian, Malaysian, Brazilian and Japanese cultures.

The Kai-Shin curriculum is the result of T. Kent Nelson's study of the concepts & philosophies of Jeet Kune Do. He first began to develop his views of martial principal study in 1992, and his approach was recognized and endorsed by the Unity Martial Arts Association on May 13, 1997. He has been evolving and improving on his vision ever since, training very closely with such martial art living legends as Guro Dan Inosanto and Suikendo founder Sensei Tadashi Yamashita.   He has also trained with such masters as US Navy SEAL hand-to-hand combat creator Sifu Paul Vunak,  pressure point expert Taika Seiyu Oyata, and Filipino combat knife expert Dr. Gyi. The main systems which contribute to the art are Boxing-Kickboxing, Kali-Silat, Suikendo, Jun Fan Gung Fu / Jeet Kune Do, Muay Thai, and Jujitsu.  Along with his strong belief in Martial Arts Cross Training,  he also draws from those techniques found within  law enforcement and military defensive tactics.
